Looking at upcoming international events can provide inspiration for images which will sell. It’s important to look ahead a couple of months, as customers will start searching for images well before the date of the event.
Here are a few forthcoming events in April, May and June which might fire up your imagination:
12th April – The 100th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic. Images of cruise ships, docks, icebergs, and so on will be popular searches for people interested in this anniversary. Find out more from the Titanic Heritage Trust.
18th May – The Olympic torch arrives in the United Kingdom from Greece and the relay around the UK begins. Olympic related images will be popular throughout this period and during the Games themselves in July/August. Be careful, however, not to infringe trademarks related to the Olympic Games. Find out more from the London 2012 Torch Relay website.
2nd to 5th June – This is the official date for celebrations to mark the diamond (60th) anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Festivities will be happening around the UK and the Commonwealth countries. Pictures such as street parties, iconic images of the UK and royal symbols are likely to be in demand.
6th June – On this date Venus will make a ‘solar transit’, passing between the Earth and the Sun so it’s visible as a ‘black dot’ moving across the face of the Sun. This event has only occurred 8 times since the invention of the telescope, so it’s likely to cause international interest. Images of the previous solar transit (which was in 2004), of safe viewing of the Sun and illustrations of Venus itself will be popular in the lead up. More information can be found on the NASA website.
8th June to 1st July – Between these dates the ‘Euro 2012′ football (soccer) tournament will take place in Poland and Ukraine. Customers may be searching for generic football images as well as images related to the tournament itself (eg the stadiums being used or famous landmarks in the host nations). Find more information at the Euro 2012 site.
