Simon Howden is a graphic designer, photographer, painter and illustrator based in the historic cathedral city of Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK.
Simon joined FreeDigitalPhotos.net in March 2009, and has contributed almost 1000 superb photos and digital illustrations. He has generated sales of nearly $7,000 (£4,500 / €5,250) since he has been with us. This means he has received $5,250 thanks to our 75% payout.
FreeDigitalPhotos.net gives a low-res version of great quality images away for free (the end-user must acknowledge the contributor where free images are used) - this attracts millions of visitors. Many of these visitors prefer a licence that does not require acknowledgement of the contributor, or they need larger versions of the images; licences for both scenarios are offered for sale. Our contributors get paid an industry-leading 75% on sales of their photos.
I contribute to most of the major stock imagery sites, most recently here at FreeDigitalPhotos.net. Since joining FreeDigitalPhotos.net my monthly earnings have exceeded my expectations. It has taken a year or more to generate the same revenue on other major sites. I definitely see this model of selling stock imagery as the best way forward. After all, everyone likes something for FREE!

I am a graphic designer, photographer, painter and illustrator specialising in all aspects of design for print - from logo design and corporate branding to promotional literature, brochures and direct mail campaigns.
I live in the historic cathedral city of Salisbury Wiltshire UK from where I run my own Graphic Design business.
I originally studied Graphic Design / Fine Art and Photography at Salisbury College from where I was head hunted and offered my first post in the industry at Thames TV in London. This led to a 10 year career in a variety of award-winning design and advertising agencies in London. It was whilst working for the Disney Corporation that I set up my own design business and became one of only a few designated licensed studios allowed to produce Disney-related artwork for UK licence holders.
I then joined a small commercial printing company which merged with another design and printing company in the area.
Working within what was to become a large print and media corporation, I continued to service a small client base on a freelance basis which included all aspects of creative design with the addition of commercial photography.
As a graphic designer I have always used photography as a reference source, with an eye for composition and layout, shooting with the availability of copy space in mind as well as an ability to crop and edit for the end user.
I continue to work here in Salisbury for a variety of local and national clients and offer a full design service delivering both creative and high quality design solutions - coordinating all aspects of a client's project from concept through to photography, copy writing, web design and print. I am trading as Simon.Howden - All things creative.
Having built up an extensive portfolio of imagery I contribute to most of the major stock imagery sites, most recently here at FreeDigitalPhotos. Since joining FreeDigitalPhotos.net, though, my monthly earnings have exceeded my expectations. It has taken a year or more to generate the same revenue on other major sites. I definitely see this model of selling stock imagery as the best way forward. After all, everyone likes something for FREE!
With many thanks to Simon Howden for his co-operation and enthusiasm in putting together this case study.
